The SCWT Health & Pedigree Database for Breeders

The SCWT Health and Pedigree Database was created and is maintained to support breeders in their goal to produce healthy Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers with correct type and temperament.

Preserves our past – We preserve as many as four photographs of each dog for future generations. Photographic pedigrees are important because, at a glance, we can see the strengths of the entire pedigree, rather than considering individual ancestors in isolation.  The Database also makes it possible to find dogs with frozen semen.

Protects our future – The Database houses health clearances in a central page and they are backed up. It helps to ensures that a breeder can make informed breeding decisions based on health, temperament, and conformation. COI’s are available.

Promotes – The Database builds a partnership of transparency and trust with the puppy buying public. More and more pet owners and potential pet owners are discovering the Database and using it to help educate themselves about Wheatens. We know there are no foolproof guarantees for health, but owners are becoming more knowledgeable about the diseases Wheatens are prone to through basic internet searches and social media groups. They know what tests should be performed before a mating and they want to know that those tests have been done to minimize risk.

What information we want and why is it important: We want as much information about individual dogs as we can get: all the basics, such as registered name and number, call name, birthdate, and date of death, if applicable. Beyond that, physical characteristics, such as size, eye color, coat type; litters produced; health certifications; health issues, including reproductive history, and any research projects the dog has been a part of. The more information a breeder has, the better informed their decisions can be.

Entering a litter is important for several reasons. The Database can serve as a backup to the records breeders are required by The American Kennel Club and other registries to keep. Litter records can also help other breeders make breeding decisions. Moreover, when a breeder enters the names and email addresses of their pet owners, those owners will receive annual updates from the Endowment about Wheaten health news.

Updating your dogs records are important! Transparent sharing of information helps other breeders, pet owners, veterinarians, and researchers.
