DNA Testing
After years of research supported by thousands of Wheatens and their owners and breeders, Littman, Meryl P, Wiley Claire A, Raducha, Michael G, Henthorn, Paula S. at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) identified two genes associated with PLN in DNA samples. A simple cheek swab test to determine an individual dog’s DNA status with regard to these two genes was introduced to Wheaten owners in May 2012.
It is suggested that the owners of all Wheaten Terriers know the PLN variant gene test of their dog.
Purpose: Determines if your Wheaten Terrier is at low, intermediate, or high risk of developing Protein-Losing Nephropathy. Results determine how often a urinalysis and Urine Protein Creatinine Ratio should be performed.
Frequency: Only once in the lifetime of the dog.
Purpose of the Test: Helps owners and vets identify if a dog carries the gene variant. Allows for proactive monitoring of the dog’s health through annual blood and urine health testing.
Important Information to Consider: We have learned that just because we have a PLN Variant Gene Test available that we are not going to hear of dogs with PLN. PLN can be hereditary or non-hereditary. Dogs with no markers are at the lowest risk. That does not mean there is no risk.
Along with DNA testing for the PLN Variant gene you can now test for Degenerative Myelopathy markers and Paroxysmal dyskinesia. While you might receive DNA testing on Microphthalmia the pet owner does not need to worry about this marker. However, it is important to the breeder.
Commercial labs, the AKC and University labs have the DNA testing available to owners for a cost. If you are in need of swabs to test your Wheaten you may obtain them at no charge from the SCWTCA Endowment Inc.
