Keystone Health Conference

In May of 2003, a group of dedicated Wheaten Terrier breeders and groups hosted a unique Wheaten Terrier health symposium in Keystone, Colorado, where fanciers could interact and network with key researchers involved in ongoing studies regarding the breed’s health. The goal was to provide a forum where, away from the distractions of dog shows, Wheaten fanciers could freely talk with research teams to examine problems, note progress, and identify areas for future exploration regarding the Wheaten Terrier’s health. This event was privately funded.

Over 50 participants attended from all over the world. During the symposium, veterinarians and genetic researchers gave seminars on the anatomy and functions of the canine structures pertinent to genetic diseases associated with the SCWT. Later each scientist offered a succinct overview of their work and a proactive panel discussion followed. Informed audience participation was a key factor in the discussions. Roundtable breakout sessions led by each of the presenters allowed the presenters and the participants to interact in an intimate setting. These sessions were held concurrently, allowing all attendees an an opportunity to address every aspect of the material covered.

Presenters were Dr. Paula Henthorne, Dr. Meryl Littman, Dr. Shelly Vaden and Dr Wendy Beers.

Organized by Janet Petros, Carol Carlson and Joyce Schroeder.
